About Bingua

Bingua is an iPhone app for learning Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian or Portuguese from real videos made by native speakers, with dual-language transcripts you can tap for instant translations and flashcards built from the words you save.

What Bingua is

Bingua is an iPhone app that teaches languages through an endless feed of real videos made by native speakers. Every video comes with a dual-language transcript that scrolls in time with the speech: the line in the language you are learning, with the English line beneath it.

Tap any word you don't know and a card opens where you were already looking, with the translation, the kind of word it is, and a plain-English note on what it is doing in that sentence. Swipe a line sideways for a short breakdown of how the whole sentence fits together. One tap saves a word or sentence, and saved items come back as flashcards when you are about to forget them, alongside a quiz built entirely from your own cards.

The feed matches your level: beginners get slower-spoken videos and more advanced learners get faster ones, and speech speed can be turned down in the settings. Bingua covers Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Portuguese, with English as the translation language.

The idea behind it fits in one line: most language apps teach you sentences nobody actually says. Bingua starts from what people really say, in videos you would choose to watch anyway.

Who it is for

Anyone who wants to learn one of the six languages from real speech rather than made-up example sentences. It suits learners who have outgrown beginner apps but still lose the thread in native video, and it works for beginners too: during setup you pick your level, and the feed then chooses slower-spoken videos for beginners and faster ones for more advanced learners. You can change your level later, and turn the speech speed down in the settings.

What Bingua is not

  • Not a course. There is no fixed syllabus, no units and no placement test. The feed and the review deck are the method.
  • Not a grammar app. Sentence breakdowns explain the line you are looking at; they are not a grammar reference.
  • Not a social network. No friends, leaderboards or comments. Nobody else sees your progress.
  • Not a video platform. Bingua does not host or produce video. It adds a learning layer to video made by native speakers.
  • Not a translator. Translations exist to help you understand a video, not as a general translation tool.
